If you already hold an adult passport, you may be eligible for renewal. Renewing a passport is easier than applying for a new one because you don't need a guarantor, proof of Canadian citizenship and supporting identification.
You are eligible to renew your Canadian passport if your last passport:
- Was an adult passport issued when you were at least 16 years old.
- Was issued within the last 15 years from the date of your renewal application.
- Was valid for either 5 or 10 years.
- Has the same name, date of birth, and place of birth that you want on your new passport.
- Has the same gender identifier as you want on your new passport.
Valid passports must be included with your application and will be canceled upon submission, rendering them unusable for travel purposes.
If you are younger than 16 years old, you can only submit an application for a new child passport.
A child passport remains valid for up to 5 years and remains so until its expiry date, even after the child reaches 16 years of age. It cannot be renewed. Once the child turns 16, they can apply for a new adult passport. Therefore, you must apply for a new child passport when it expires until the child is eligible for an adult passport.
Here’s how you can renew your passport:
Prepare Required Documents:
- Your current Canadian passport.
- Two identical passport photos that meet the specifications outlined by Passport Canada.
- Completed Adult General Passport Application form (available online or at a passport office).
- Any necessary supporting documents (e.g., proof of citizenship if your status has changed).
Complete Application Form: Fill out the Adult General Passport Application form accurately and completely.
Submit Application: You can submit your application:
- By mail to the address specified on the form.
- In person at a Passport Canada receiving agent (Service Canada or Canada Post office).
Pay the applicable fees and Wait for Processing.
Receive New Passport: Once approved, you’ll receive your new passport by mail or you can pick it up if you applied in person.
Dispose of Old Passport: Your old passport will be returned to you. It is no longer valid for travel but should be kept in a safe place as it contains immigration records.
You can renew an expired, damaged, lost, or stolen passport if it was issued within the last 15 years from the date you apply, and you meet all other eligibility requirements.
The timing of your passport renewal depends on whether you need it for travel or identification purposes.
