If you are on an international trip and are planning to return to Canada by bus, train, airplane, or boat, you must have a valid permanent resident (PR) card to re enter Canada. You are not able to use your PR card as a travel document after it expires. Renew your card before you depart if you know it will expire while you're away. You can only renew your card in Canada.
You can apply for a new permanent resident (PR) card if your current one has expired or will expire in less than nine months. There will be a new expiration date on the new card. New PR cards are typically good for five years.
In order to qualify for a PR card, you must
- hold a permanent residency status
- file your application within Canada
Eligibility Criteria for PR Card Renewal
- Your card is about to expire or has expired within the last nine months.
- your card was not received within 180 days of your immigration to Canada; it was lost, stolen, or destroyed.
Your card has to be updated to:
- Legally alter your name and citizenship.
- Modify your gender identity.
- To correct your date of birth.
